The Smile in Becca’s Name fundraiser, continues to support cancer patients through the Friends of the Moncton Hospital.
While battling cancer, Rebecca Schofield’s focus was not on herself, but on spreading kindness to the rest of the world.
She passed away last year, but her legacy carries on.
Becca’s mom Anne Schofield says the “Rebecca Schofield fund, Smile In Becca’s Name” will help cancer patients with things like the cost of transportation, appointments, groceries and unexpected bills, “You can choose an experience, it doesn’t necessarily have to be money. People are always worried that they don’t have a $100 or $50 to spare, but if you have $5, that can bring a smile to someone’s face.”
It can also be as simple as funds to buy a scarf for a cancer patient who has lost their hair.
“We have cancer patients who are missing appointments because they can’t afford a babysitter and people can’t take time off work. We are asking people to use their smile money to bring that smile to a cancer patient,” Schofield says.
Anne says Becca had smile money as well, “We went to a science museum in Nova Scotia and we met a family there and the two kids wanted slime. But the mother told them she was not spending money on slime. Rebecca asked if she could buy the slime for them, and I told her she had smile money. If that was what was going to make her smile, then to go ahead. SO she bought slime for the kids and some for herself as well. On another occasion. she also used her smile money to take her sister and her best friend to the spa.”
A fundraising marathon will be held on July 19th on 91.9 The Bend. More details can be found HERE
