The Tele-Drive program in Albert County is getting new life.
President of Westmorland Albert Transpo Donald Wilson says it will undergo a consolidation with other area services, “All of the services currently provided by Rural Rides, Rural Rides Tantramar and Tele-Drive in Alma will improve and expand the service to those who need it.”
Last month, the Tele-Drive program was put on hold, after the recent departure of their Manager. They were unable to replace the position due to a lack of funding, and the future of the program was at risk.
“There’s a lot of seniors out there and people without the ability to drive their own vehicles and there’s no regular transport. There’s no buses to a lot of these areas. They can afford taxis to get to medical appointments and to shop for groceries, so this is an essential service,” Wilson says.
He adds, that with With dedicated volunteers, both as staff and drivers, this will turn into a very successful venture.
“The service is going to expand and improve with the aid of volunteers. We have support of a lot of organizations, and our MP in the area. It is time to get our wheels spinning and we’re looking forward to doing a great service,” Wilson says.
