Milk is a staple item for many of us when shopping for groceries but the cost can be substantial especially for those with limited incomes.
Field Agent Canada recently found milk prices are much higher in Atlantic Canada compared to the rest of the country.
Spokesperson Jeff Doucette says numerous restrictions and minimum prices surrounding milk is costing consumers.
“If you’re a single mom trying to buy milk for your family, it’s a huge outlay… if it’s $6 or $7 for a four litre jug (in the Atlantic Provinces) versus $4 in Ontario,” he notes.
He says consumers are being challenged by a strong dairy lobby, milk boards in each of the provinces and the federal government has limited control except for what dairy products flow into the country.
Doucette says less nutritious options such as pop are usually cheaper since soft drink companies can produce on a mass scale and ship anywhere unlike the dairy industry.
