The Greater Moncton SPCA is currently overrun by kittens.
Executive Director for the Greater Moncton SPCA Dave Rogers says it isn’t unusual to have dozens of kittens being cared for at the shelter at this time of year, “We probably have around ten litters of kittens of different ages in the building right now. We also have about seven litters in foster homes right now.”
Rogers says the late spring and early summer is known as kitten season.
“In most cases they are surrendered to us, either by their owner or by someone who has found them stray. Sometimes, we do get females who are coming in very, very pregnant and they have their kittens at the shelter,” Rogers says.
An over abundance of kittens takes its toll. Rogers says they are currently using around 200 pounds of litter a day and they had to buy around $200 worth of kitten food yesterday.
“We have stepped up our foster program, which has been a big help. Calling in good citizens who would like to help us by bringing in kittens for six to eight weeks,” Rogers says.
