Besides residents of a growing tent city on Albert Street, there are other individuals in Moncton who have chosen not to go to a homeless shelter
YMCA ReConnect spokesperson Trevor Goodwin says tents have also been set up in other parts of the city.
He says part of the ReConnect program is to help identify those locations and go out and speak with the people that are there.
“What’s the reason that they have landed there? It’s really identifying their story and their needs and seeing if we can help them,” Goodwin says.
After speaking with some individuals of the tent city and other clients, Goodwin adds they want everyone to know that they are people too and they’ve had a stretch of bad luck or a change in circumstances they weren’t expecting or prepared for.
The City of Moncton announced last week the Albert Street tent city can remain on city-owned land until the new shelter opens in August.
But new rules are in place including keeping the area clean and 24-7 surveillance has been put in place with security guards and added lighting.
