An emergency shelter in Miramichi which has been housing evacuated apartment tenants has moved from a gym to a nearby church.
Red Cross volunteers set up the shelter last week after 50 tenants were forced to leave their apartment building when the Fire Marshal’s Office declared it unsafe.
Tenants of the 42-unit building are being urged to register with the Red Cross even if they are staying somewhere else.
Over the weekend, the emergency shelter moved a few blocks from the Golden Hawk Gym due to an upcoming event to the Skyway to Heaven Church.
The Fire Marshal’s Office said electrical wires were exposed during renovations which increased the risk of fire.
Provincial officials are expected to get an update from the building owners today on the timeline to complete the renovations and another inspection which would allow tenants to return home.
