If you have walked around Jones Lake recently, you may have noticed the rotten smell.
It could be from the dead fish that have recently appeared around the edge of the water.
City of Moncton Spokesperson Isabelle Leblanc says they were notified of the dead fish this morning, and they reached out to the Department of Environment.
In an email to our newsroom, a spokesperson for the Department of Environment and Local Government says, “An Inspector has found numerous dead fish along the edge of Jones Lake in Moncton. The Inspector will be making a fish-kill report to the Canadian Coast Guard and other federal and provincial authorities. RCMP and other city officials are on the scene as well. There was no apparent source of land pollution observed at the time of the field inspection.”
On May 30th, hundreds of students from Bessborough and Hillcrest schools walked to Jones Lake for their “WE Walk for Water” event.
We contacted several individuals who took part and they told us, there were no dead fish in the water at that time. They also said the water appeared to be clear that day. As a part of the event, samples of the water were also taken, but the test results were reportedly normal.
