The Town of Riverview and the City of Dieppe have both taken steps to ban single use plastic bags by July 2020.
A bylaw is now being considered by both municipalities.
The City of Moncton gave it first reading last week.
Riverview Councillor Tammy Rampersaud believes the town is being fair to the business community.
“We are taking into consideration what the retailers in our municipality need. I think a lot of them won’t be shocked to see this happen because we are all moving in this direction.”
If adopted by the tri-communities, the bylaw would mean businesses could no longer give out plastic bags and there would be a charge for paper bags at the checkout.
Some exemptions would include plastic bags used for dry cleaning, to bundle flowers and small bags for produce in grocery stores.
