The everchanging Petitcodiac River is having an impact on infrastructure along the riverbank since the causeway gates were opened a few years ago.
Moncton’s riverfront boardwalk behind 300 Main Street has become unstable.
City general manager Catherine Dallaire says a 150 metre stretch needs to be repaired.
“They are going to be working underneath the structure to secure it so that you don’t have the effect of erosion undermining the boardwalk,” she notes.
Although councillor Greg Turner says the city supports the opening of the causeway gates, he feels the provincial and federal governments should also be involved since it was their decision.
“If there is any infrastructure that is being compromised – be it owned by the city or privately – this is not a decision the city of Moncton was consulted about when these gates were opened permanently,” Turner says.
Moncton City Council has awarded a tender to Atlantic Underground Services Ltd. worth more than $623,000 which was the lowest of the four bids received.
