A small blue bag filled with flyers is tossed in the driveways of roughly 300,000 homes in New Brunswick every week.
But a Moncton resident is getting fed up with flyers and wants an opt-in system rather than the current opt-out system.
Fred Laforge says he has collected thousands of signatures for an online petition he started.
“Over the years, I have contacted the company countless times to opt-out. As soon as the delivery driver changes, the lump of paper reappears in my driveway and it turns out I’m not the only one,” he says.
Laforge notes 60,000 lumps of paper are distributed around Moncton alone each week.
He says that’s enough waste to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool every couple weeks.
Since most of us have access to the internet, Laforge adds the flyers can all be viewed online.
City staff are already working on recommendations surrounding flyers and will report back to city council soon.
