The provincial minister of social development says if someone decides to live in a tent, there is nothing anyone can do to stop them.
Several tents have been set up at the end of Albert Street, not very far from where Moncton’s new homeless shelter will be located.
An unsightly tent site was torn down by city crews in the west end last week and heavy machinery was brought in for the cleanup.
Dorothy Shephard says we may never be able to solve the homelessness issue.
“It’s very complex… there’s mental health issues, there’s addictions, there’s family breakdowns, there’s just things that happen in people’s lives that send them to a place that isn’t very nice. But we need to be there to support that process for the coming back,” she notes.
Shephard says the government has an obligation to ensure the homeless have access to services and a place to stay until they get back on their feet.
