The school year is not over yet which is why it’s important for drivers to be vigilant of school buses and stopping when their red lights are flashing.
RCMP Sergeant Mario Maillet is with the province’s traffic enforcement unit.
He says driver inattention is often the culprit.
“Other times it becomes distracted driving where drivers are using their cell phones or anything like that where they are not paying attention on the road,” he notes.
Maillet says many bus drivers do report violations and residents are urged to make note of license plate numbers of violators and report them.
Drivers in New Brunswick can be fined almost $300 for not stopping for school buses.
Neighbouring provinces like Prince Edward Island have even higher penalties where drivers face a fine of $5000 plus a surcharge.
In Nova Scotia, the fine ranges from about $600 to $2400.
