The president of the New Brunswick Teachers Association says it’s time that we as a society start valuing our educators the way we used to.
George Daley says his organization is having discussions about ways to promote the profession to recruit new teachers and retain existing ones given an expected shortage.
“Teachers are too easily the target of criticism. Everyone went to school so everyone has an opinion on the education system.”
Daley says the teaching profession is still well-respected but a lot of members get subjected to online statements and attacks.
He adds it’s a difficult job so when you factor that into the mix, teaching may not be viewed as a favourable option as it had been in the past.
The NBTA believes as many as 1,000 teachers will likely retire over the next five years.
