The Horizon Health Network says emergency rooms should only be used for true emergencies.
Spokesperson Dr. Edouard Hendricks says congestion has become a system-wide issue in New Brunswick and patients should be using other options.
“(Some of the options include) calling Telecare 811, visiting a pharmacist, making an appointment with your family doctor or nurse practitioner or even visiting an after-hours clinic if your primary care provider isn’t readily available or if you don’t have one,’ he says.
Dr. Hendricks admits the primary care model needs to be enhanced so that the emergency room is not the main source of care.
Emergency departments are undergoing a review process with a goal of maximizing their efficiencies.
Despite congestion, Dr. Hendricks is assuring everyone that patients who are experiencing emergencies such as trauma, heart attacks or other urgent situations will be seen.
He adds hospitals are often so congested that stretchers line hallways noting how at least 25 percent of beds are filled with patients who are waiting for community or long term care.
