New Brunswick’s forest fire season is officially underway.
Parts of the south are quite wet while a heavy snow cover remains in northern areas of the province.
But wildfire prevention officer Roger Collet says it doesn’t take long for the ground to dry up in the spring.
“Once the snow goes and depending on the conditions of the day… if we have a good breeze going… it can dry up those dead grasses and dead leaves very quickly,” he notes.
Collet urges extreme caution for anyone who decides to burn.
Residents must also ensure that burning is permitted in their particular region on the day they decide to burn.
Collet adds a few small fires have already been reported across the southern portion of the province.
