Harvest House Atlantic has been working with the province to ensure the homeless have a place to go when the Out of the Cold shelter closes on Monday.
Founder Cal Maskery says the province is providing them with items from the Assomption Boulevard location that is closing down, “They going to give us their cots. They had the cots that they purchased for the old fire hall. They are very portable cots and they fold up well, and they are in good condition. So we are going to inherit 30 to 40 of those. We are also getting the lockers they had there.”
Maskery says this will bring the total number of beds at their shelter to 47.
He adds, they will also be able to hire two additional staff.
“In mid to late May we are going to re-evaluate. We will know our volume by the end of May,” Maskery says.
The House of Nazareth shelter is also receiving around 16 beds..
“Some may go back out in the tents, now that the weather is getting warmer, it’s hard to say. More people will now be aware of our services and we expect there will be an increase in people coming to the shelter, but exactly how much of an increase, we don’t know yet, Maskery says.
