More than 217,500 Canadians left the country for health care in 2017.
Between 6,100 and 12,700 New Brunswickers were part of that figure.
A new think tank called Second Street has prepared a report on medical tourism using data from Statscan.
Spokesperson Colin Craig says this kind of tourism should be a wake up call for governments.
“Because every time a Canadian leaves our country and pays for health care in another country, they are spending money in that country and supporting jobs in that country.”
Craig says the data doesn’t breakdown why Canadians are leaving for health care.
But he expects that long wait times and procedures not offered here at home may be just a couple of reasons.
