A small surplus has been recorded as the Higgs government releases an update for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2018-19.
The surplus is $4.5 million compared to the budgeted deficit of almost $189 million.
While the province intends to balance the books this year and next year, Treasury Board President Ernie Steeves says some difficult decisions must be made.
He adds the government doesn’t have unlimited financial resources and must spend within its means.
The Department of Social Development is over budget and so is the Department of Public Safety which is mainly due to last spring’s historic flooding.
New Brunswick’s net debt is expected to climb to more than $14.1 billion by the end of March.
