While many had anxiety over the legalization of recreational marijuana, the federal health minister feels the regime has been rolled out successfully and has been rather uneventful.
Product shortages have been a problem since cannabis became legal in mid-October but Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor believes the supply issue should ultimately take care of itself.
Petitpas Taylor says the rationale for legalization was to protect young people and take a bite out of the black market.
But she says that will take a lot more time and the federal government knew it wouldn’t happen overnight.
She noted how it took the state of Colorado about five years to take a 70 percent chunk out of the black market.
Petitpas Taylor she has spoken to police officers who say there has been no jump in crime related to cannabis legalization or a noticeable increase in consumption.
