You may have noticed a new light on the top of your child’s school bus recently.
In 2016, strobe lights were added as a mandatory item for newly built school buses.
Transportation Manager for Anglophone East School District David McCormick says the lights have been added to some of their buses and parents are now taking note, “This is at the back of the bus on the roof, six feet back. It’s to give the public awareness that there are students on board.”
McCormick believes it is a good benefit, “We have seen from other jurisdictions, in the early mornings when you have fog or rain, you will definitely notice the bus a couple of kilometres away because of that strobe. It definitely gives you that awareness of something ahead.”
As newer buses are added to the fleet, they will all have the addition of the strobe lights
“We are okay to add strobe lights to older buses as well, which we will do in some rural areas,” McCormick says.
