At least two Canadian cities are reportedly exploring the possibility of hosting the Francophonie Games in 2021 now that New Brunswick has pulled out.
On January 30th, the Higgs PC government said the Games would not go ahead in the province due to the escalating cost of $130 million and the lack of a funding commitment from the Trudeau government.
Sherbrooke lost the 2021 bid to Moncton-Dieppe but will now revisit the idea at a city council meeting next week.
Quebec’s Opposition Liberals say it could be an opportunity for the province to become “the undisputed leader of Canada’s Francophones”.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg has also jumped into the race after its city council passed a resolution earlier this week to explore the possibility of hosting the event.
The Manitoba capital certainly has the infrastructure to hold the Games having previously hosted the Pan Am Games twice in 1967 and 1999 and the Canada Games in 2017.
