Fourteen students from Bessborough School are heading to Montreal next month for what will be an opportunity of a lifetime for some.
The grade 8 students, will fly to Montreal to take part in WE DAY on February 11th. It is a day of speakers and performers that empower youth, who are committed to making a difference.
When Veronica Deamude found out, she was excited, but nervous at the same time, “When we found out, I was scared if my parents would let me go, but then I found out that they had know for weeks.”
Sally Carpenter is a teacher and she also runs the Leadership Club at Bessborough. She says they told the parents weeks in advance, “Probably a month ago. It was quite funny to make the phone call to parents. First of all we had to ask if their child was out of earshot. Then we explained and the parents were all very thankful and supportive. Everyone of them managed to keep it a secret from their child. They were very excited to get the phone call yesterday from their son or daughter who called to let them know they were going to Montreal.”
Eliza Macdonald is another one of the lucky students chosen to go, “I wasn’t aware at all, and I was totally surprised.”
Flights for the 14 students are being paid for by WestJet and their hotel rooms are covered by the WE day organization along with any transportation needed.
“WE Day is a great experience. It is about empowering people and those who have volunteered and helped the community in different ways. One of the 14 is going to be speaking there. It is just trying to spread awareness of volunteering and the good that is being done,” Deamude says.
Other grade 8 students who were chosen to go to Montreal are Emily Bouchard, Ney Dubois, Riley Dykeman, Hugh Englehart, Matthew Ford, Jaime Gallant, Ryan Hughes, Haley Campbell, Natalie Dawson, Olivia Kikkert, Laura, McNally and Finn Sanford.
Bessborough School has been involved with WE day since 2013, through fundraisers, and other activities.
“We do bake sales and turkey walks at Christmas time. We also do Student Secretory days where we help the Secretaries at our school. Those are just a few of the things we do at Bessborough,” Macdonald says.
The school has raised a total of $14, 000 since 2013.
WE Day is a celebration of young people committed to making a difference.
