The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development is expanding access to its online training for parents of children and youth with autism.
Isabelle Cowan with the Autism Learning Partnership says training provides parents with an introduction to behavioural interventions and learning strategies
It was previously offered in the province, but to a specific age group, “The training was offered to parents of preschool aged children with Autism in September 2018. Today we are offering the same opportunity to parents with school aged children.”
“Research shows parental involvement in their child’s intervention has a positive impact,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Dominic Cardy. “Expanding the availability of this training is an important step toward providing these families with the tools and supports they need to be successful in an inclusive, world-class education system from elementary to high school.”
The modules provide parents with an introduction to behavioural interventions and learning strategies for children with the disorder. They give parents tools to better understand, question and engage in their child’s program, as well as equip them to support their child’s intervention or educational program.
Cowan says this is exciting news,”I started out as a School Psychologist and over the years, I have developed a passion for supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I am very proud to be at the Department to help support building capacity across the system.”
Access to the online training is free and registration for the first session is available until January 31st..
