The City of Dieppe is transforming an almost 180-year-old farmhouse into a community cultural centre.
Joseph Doiron House on Amirault Street was built in 1841 by a wealthy Acadian farmer.
Dieppe mayor Yvon Lapierre says this is the city’s last chance to conserve something that has real historical value.
“I think people will be very happy with the community use that we will get out of it and look at our ancestors… the type of life they led and so on.”
Lapierre says historians are amazed by the types of wood, joints and stones which have been found during the restoration.
The City of Dieppe and the federal government are each contributing $380,000 toward the project.
Interior and exterior renovations should be finished by this spring with a planned opening in June.
