A memorial in Victoria Park that honours three fallen Moncton police officers is being moved to Bore Park.
It commemorates Constable Joseph Steadman, Corporal Aurele Bourgeois and Constable Micheal O’Leary died in the line of duty between 1892 and 1974.
Moncton City Councillor Bryan Butler says the idea was brought to him by retired police Chief Greg Cohoon, “They approached me and they wanted to know if there was anything that Council could do. I asked them if they had a place in mind, and they all said they would like to have it down by where the police station had been.”
Butler says it’s an important memorial for the former Moncton police force officers.
This memorial, along with another for fallen firefighters, were vandalized last year by spray paint.
“We’ve got the money set aside to move it. I hope it can be sometime before December this year, because their death was in December. A lot of things have to go into consideration though, the weather and whether they can pour concrete, just a number of things,” Butler says.
The cost to move the memorial is between $3000 and $5000.
