The annual Take Back the Night march is planned for tonight in downtown Moncton.
Director of the Southeast Sexual Assault Centre Genevieve Latour says it is an event held each year around the world.
“Take Back the Night is because women do not feel safe walking on the street alone at night. We should not be living with that fear,” Latour says.
This year’s theme is Stop Rape Culture.
“We’ll have an exhibit that our volunteers came up with and it is called What were you wearing? The idea is rape culture often asks that question, and it is a way to blame the victim though,” Latour adds.
It begins at 6pm at the Community Peace Centre. Marchers will head to the city hall plaza for a rally, before marching on Main Street..
“It is truly a time where we see solidarity and it is really energizing and knowing we have support. We want to change things and it is a celebration at the same time,” Latour says.
Last year they had around 70 people attend, but Latour expects even more this year.
