To say it’s not your run-of-the-mill getaway spot would be an understatement.
A Toronto man who bought the old village jail in Dorchester, New Brunswick and now calls it his home sweet home is offering people the opportunity to spend a night in one of the old jail cells which he’s renting out through Airbnb at a base cost of $34 for a single cell and one person.
“Having a big old spooky jail…a bunch of cells, I got a death row, I got people buried in the back. You can’t get much better than that,” says owner of the jail, Bill Steele.
And according to Steele, it looks like others are interested in throwing themselves in jail — at least for one night. He says that the month of August is already almost 75-percent all booked up.
“More and more it seems that people are really interested in the jail and the history behind it and all that stuff, so I’ve opened it completely up as much as I can being a single guy here doing it myself, a big thousands of square foot building, and inviting everybody in to take a look at it,” says Steele.
When it comes to what you can expect, Steele says that you’re in a stone room that’s very quiet:
“Everybody’s just loved the sleep that they got in there knowing that they get out in the morning not like previous tenants of the room and in the morning you’ll get toast and coffee and you’re lucky to get that. You’ll get some discharge papers — we’re just in the process of that. We’ll take a picture of you in the cell if you want.”
