The use of midwives could save the provincial healthcare system almost a million dollars a year even if they were used in just ten per cent of the births. That claim being made by Sonya Burrill of New Brunswick Families for Midwives based on what has happened in other provinces.
She argues midwifery reduces Emergency Room visits, shortens hospital stays, reduces the number of C-sections and helps new moms cope better with post partum depression.
Political parties in the province are being urged to make commitments to midwifery as part of their election promises. Burrill maintains they can’t afford not to.
