Firefighters thought they were responding to a car fire in downtown Moncton late this morning.
But when they arrived at 180 Weldon Street shortly before 10:30, the fire had spread to a couple of older homes on either side of the car.
Moncton deputy fire chief Don McCabe says the fire proved challenging.
“There’s extensive fire damage at 182 Weldon, the fire had gotten into the attic. At 180 Weldon, we protected it enough that the fire didn’t really get anywhere. The car is likely destroyed.”
The homes were either duplexes or triplexes but all tenants got out safely.
McCabe says the fire began in the car but no word yet on what caused it.
Meantime, Red Cross volunteers are assisting a couple and two children from one home and have offered help if needed to residents of the second house.
