The provincial leader of the Green Party David Coon grilling the Minister of Environment in the legislature over why the Energy East pipeline proposal isn’t being required to undergo an environmental impact assessment through his department.
Coon says New Brunswickers are worried the pipeline could leak or spill bitumin and emit hazardous air pollutants.
He says after Stephen Harper gutted the federal environmental assessment process, and much of Canada’s environment protection legislation, what possibly could give the Minister confidence that the National Energy Board will give a tinker’s dam about what we hold dear in New Brunswick.
Kenny says there’s a process in place and they’ll follow the due process like any other government throughout Canada adding they will make sure New Brunswickers’ water and everything else will be safe.
The department has applied for intervenor status into the NEB hearing into the pipeline project.
