The third player in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement is Mexico. Exports from New Brunswick to Mexico only amount to something like $14 million a year. Fred Bergman, a senior economist with the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council, sees the possibility of a win-win-win especially if minimum wages in Mexico rise.
He points out minimum wages in Mexico are about half of what they are in Atlantic Canada and if they rise then Mexican consumers will have more money to spend and, as such, that would open up the door for more exports from New Brunswick to Mexico.
Bergman is hoping the negotiations will include how do we bring Mexico up.
