Moncton Headstart has been experiencing some financial stress and its executive director says it’s something the non-profit orgranization has been dealing with for years now.
Mary O’Donnell says the doors won’t close tomorrow but if unexpected expenses suddenly arise, the future would be uncertain.
She says they don’t want to be bothering the community by asking for support.
“It’s what we have to do but it’s not something that we always want to do. We don’t want people to get tired of us or think that here comes Headstart again in need of funding. But it is where we are at,” she admits.
About 40 percent of Headstart’s operating budget comes from the province and O’Donnell says they have reached out to government for more support.
The remainder comes from community fundraisers and grants.
O’Donnell says more than 4,000 children and their families are served by Moncton Headstart and she believes the organization has value in the community.
